The Friendly City – Harrisonburg, VA
Settled in the valleys of the Shenandoah Mountains is the beautiful town of Harrisonburg, Virginia. While the campus of James Madison University is housed there, the town has much more to offer any curious travelers. As I’ve stated in many of my other posts, Harrisonburg is my home away from home and is easily one of the most beautiful places I’ve ever lived. The sunsets are remarkable, and the rolling hills are vibrant and unforgettable. During undergrad, there were many times when I needed a mental reset, so I would drive down 81 or over to Skyline Drive just to see the sunset or the changing leaves or even the…

Why Is My Life A Mess Right Now? (Feat. Pot Roast & Apple Crisps Recipe)
Y’all this week has been nothing short of a mess. Before we talk about the mess take a look at what I made last night to cheer us up. We both love a good hearty meal followed by a sweet dessert! On Monday, we woke up all bright-eyed and bushy tailed that it was our anniversary and that we had a fun day ahead of us. Then the universe said NOPE! Welcome to Year 2 of marriage- your new home is severely damaged from Hurricane Florence. Let me back up – The day that Hurricane Florence hit was the day that we were supposed to close on our home, so…

Things I Google: What is Vinyasa Yoga
During our time on hurrication, my husband and I did our best to continue going to the gym. I did a lot of youtube stress relief yoga (Thanks Yoga With Adriene!), while he did a lot of hotel gym workouts. When we arrived at my parent’s house, we gained access to our local fitness center and its array of classes. The first day we went, he lifted and I did a yoga video since my body felt dead from all the traveling. After our workouts, my husband was interested in doing a yoga class with me, so we looked at the schedule and saw “Vinyasa Yoga 9:30 am”. He asked…

The Basics of The Basic School (TBS)
Congratulations! Your person has completed OCS! What an accomplishment. Time for reality to sink in that you now have a second lieutenant on your hands. Next stop: The Basic School (TBS). This school is roughly six months of hiking with a nice dose of smelly feet and MRE farts. No but seriously, it’s a tough six months for them where they learn “the basics” of being a Marine Officer. From my general understanding, they learn how to be an Officer and lead, as well as what they need to do if they are ever a ground Marine (i.e. land navigation, hiking, rifle range stuff etc.). So as a spouse, significant…

Post-Hurrication Life
Well I can safely say I will not name our first child Florence…not that I was going to anyway. She did our town dirty, and it smells like fish and poop. After a long two weeks of hurrication we are finally home- bless up. I enjoyed the time off, but man being in my own bed was SO NICE. My dogs were also so happy to be home. It was time. Poor Tuna did get greeted by a nice fire ant hill attack when he went in the backyard, but we gave him a bath and some Benadryl and he passed out happily haha. Driving home I didn’t really know…

The Hurrication
It’s the never ending vacation. We’re loving it, but it is getting exhausting. We’ve been in a hotel in Jacksonville, Fl., for 6 days. Tuna is OVER it. I’m losing my mind, my dogs are losing their mind, and boredom is setting in. BUT at least we are safe and we have food, gas, and power. I can’t really complain, but it would be nice to not be in a hotel. I decided to make another post updating our current situation, because Things I Google: Hurricane Florence was getting long. Today is Sunday, Sept 16 and we have no idea when we can go back. Our town (New Bern, NC)…

Things I Google: Hurricane Florence
How’s my morning going you ask? Well, Hurricane Florence is quickly approaching and which each prediction the news gets worse and more comical for us. The title of this could also be some of the following: Things I Google: How to stay sane Things I Google: How to close on a house before a hurricane Things I Google: Should I close on a house before a hurricane Things I Google: Hurricane Preparedness Things I Google: How to pack when you don’t have boxes because your plan has been shot to hell Things I Google: Help. Where do I start? I got this fun email first thing this morning and it’s…

OCS in a Nutshell
If you’re reading this you’re either: a) a girlfriend/boyfriend, fiancé, spouse or family member who’s significant other (or son/daughter) is interested in or is pursuing OCS *I’ll be referring to the military person in your life as ‘your person’ because it’s too difficult to try and say spouse, bf/gf, son/daughter and respect everyone’s differences while being inclusive b) one of the aforementioned people who’s been through it, but still loves a good OCS reminder c) someone just interested in reading about this wonderful military experience called OCS. For the newbies here, OCS stands for Officer Candidate School. This post will focus primarily on the United States Marine Corps OCS, but…

Dog Fish
Back on the Our Military Journey (Thus Far) post I mentioned that I moved to Pensacola on December 30th, 2016. We wanted to start the new year fresh and fun, so we decided to throw a New Year’s Eve party. We woke up on NYE and made a plan for the day, which consisted mostly of going to various thrift stores to try and find dinner and coffee tables. As we sat on the couch eating breakfast, we watched the tail end of Oceans Eleven with Brad Pitt and George Clooney (this is an important detail). As we drove around, my husband would NOT stop talking about getting a dog. The topics of…

Our Military Journey (Thus Far)
As I’ve mentioned in About Me, and The Wing It Life, my husband is in the United States Marine Corps. He’s a pilot and in the past year we’ve moved about 4 times. It’s been quite fun. Each time we’ve moved we’ve encountered a hurricane too, so that’s made it really interesting. I’ll talk more on that in a later post. When I met him he was just a guy with a dream of being a pilot and here we are some 5 years later and that dream has come true. I feel so lucky to have been part of his journey through it all. His USMC journey started in Harrisonburg, VA and…
